KATHMANDU: Nepal will be represented at the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars) by the film Anjila.

The Nepal International Feature Film Selection Committee has recommended the biographical sports drama for the International Feature Film category at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards in the United States.

Committee Chairperson Bimal Paudel said the decision was made after carefully evaluating all submissions based on subject matter, artistic quality, technical execution, and the overall message conveyed.

“Following an in-depth assessment of the film’s technical aspects, storytelling, character portrayal, and artistic style, we decided that Anjila best represents Nepal at the Oscars,” Paudel explained.

Directed by Milan Chams, the film is based on the life of Nepali women’s football team goalkeeper Anjila Tumbapo Subba, who also stars in the lead role.

Producer Prem Kumar Shrestha expressed pride in the film’s selection, saying: “It is an honor for a film highlighting a sports personality to represent Nepal at the Oscars. Nepal has been making significant progress in sports, and this movie showcases both the beauty of the country and the inspiring struggles and achievements of a female athlete. We believe it will serve as a source of inspiration globally.”

Alongside Subba, the film features performances by Dayahang Rai, Srijana Subba, Maotse Gurung, Buddhi Tamang, and others. Released in Nepal last year, Anjila was both a critical and commercial success, grossing around 90 million rupees at the domestic box office.
