Mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge leaves at least 10 dead
The death toll includes the suspected shooter.
TUMBLER RIDGE, Canada: At least ten people have been killed and dozens injured after a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in northeastern British Columbia.
The death toll includes the suspected shooter.
Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the school on Tuesday afternoon and immediately issued an emergency alert, urging local residents to lock doors and shelter in place.
Six victims were found dead inside the school, while one person died while being transported to the hospital.
Two additional bodies were discovered at a nearby residence linked to the incident.
The suspected shooter was also found dead inside the school, apparently having taken their own life.
Around 27 people sustained injuries, including several who were seriously hurt and airlifted to hospitals outside the town.
Students described hiding in classrooms with doors locked for more than two hours, recounting the fear and confusion.
The school serves grades 7 through 12 in a small rural community, making the attack particularly devastating for the tight-knit town.
Police have not released the identity or motive of the shooter and are investigating the events that led to the attack.
Authorities have confirmed there are no other suspects at large.
The community has been left in shock, and schools in the area remain closed while counselling and support services are provided to students, staff, and families. Provincial leaders have called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy” in a town unaccustomed to such violence.
