Mandikhatar Amateur Tennis 2026 concludes; Giri–Gurung win doubles title

KATHMANDU: The “Third Mandikhatar Amateur Tennis Tournament–2026” concluded on Saturday with a grand closing ceremony, marking the successful completion of five days of competitive tennis action in the capital.
The tournament, which began on April 14, featured final matches across eight categories on the concluding day, with winners crowned in various age groups.
In the marquee 35+ singles category, Bishmajung Gurung clinched the title after a hard-fought victory over Simanta Gurung, winning 3–6, 6–4, 10–7 in a thrilling tie-break finish.
Gurung further added to his success by teaming up with Meghendra Prakash Giri to win the 35+ doubles title, defeating Santosh Bhandari and Harka Singh Dhami 6–2, 6–2 in straight sets.
In the 45+ singles category, Dev Kshetri secured the championship after Amit Gurung retired mid-match, with the score at 6–3, 4–1.
Kshetri later partnered with Robin Gurung to win the doubles title as well, edging out Degendra Shrestha and Mahesh Shrestha 2–6, 7–6 (10–3) in a closely contested encounter.

Ashish Sigdel emerged victorious in the 55+ singles category, overcoming Uttam Bogati 4–6, 6–1, 10–3. In doubles, the pair of Shiva Sedhain and Himal Shah defeated Bimal K. Gurung and Degendra Shrestha 5–7, 6–2, 10–3 to claim the title.
In the 65+ singles category, Kamal Thapa defeated Pabitra Rayamajhi 6–4, 6–1 in straight sets. He went on to complete a double triumph by partnering with Chamba Dhandup to win the doubles title, beating Dhruv Gurung and Rabindra Das 4–6, 6–3, 10–5.
Organized by Mandikhatar Tennis Club, the event brought together more than 120 amateur players across different age groups, highlighting growing enthusiasm and competitive standards in Nepal’s amateur tennis scene.
During the closing ceremony, organizers also announced the upcoming President’s Cup, aimed at further developing tennis in the country. The tournament, set to begin in Shrawan, will follow a Davis Cup-style format featuring both singles and doubles competitions, open to clubs across Nepal.
Technical Director Krishna Ghale confirmed that the event will promote broader club participation, while MJTA (Man Jayankar Tennis Academy) President Manoj Shamsher Rana officially unveiled the tournament during the ceremony.
