Legendary folk singer Indira Gole Gurung passes away at 59
Gurung, who had been battling cancer for several years, died last night at 12 a.m. in her apartment in Hattiban, Lalitpur.
KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali folk singer and celebrated exponent of the ‘Kathe Bhaka’ style, Indira Gole Gurung, has passed away at the age of 59.
Gurung, who had been battling cancer for several years, died last night at 12 a.m. in her apartment in Hattiban, Lalitpur.
Born on Kartik 3, 2023 BS, in Konjyosom Rural Municipality-5, Bhardeu, Lalitpur, Indira Gole Gurung had contributed to Nepali music for over five decades.
She lent her voice to more than 5,000 songs across various genres and languages, including Nepali folk, Tamang Selo, and Deuda, winning the hearts of audiences and music lovers alike.
Her iconic songs, such as “Changunarayan Thaan” and “Aaja Malai Uniko Pachhauri”, remain immensely popular and continue to resonate with millions of Nepalis today.
According to the Tamang Artists Association, her last rites will be conducted today following Buddhist traditions. Before the cremation, her body will be placed at the National Dance Museum for public homage.
Gurung is survived by her two daughters. Her husband had also passed away several years ago due to cancer.
