Lawmakers urge action on rural health, climate, corruption, and women’s safety

KATHMANDU: In today’s National Assembly meeting, several lawmakers raised pressing concerns through the Chairperson, urging the government to take immediate action on health service gaps, environmental protection, irrigation, law enforcement, and gender-based violence.

During zero hour, lawmakers emphasized the deep divide between urban and rural health services. MP Indira Devi Gautam pointed out that a lack of skilled doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and medical equipment in rural areas continues to endanger lives. She called on the government to prioritize health as a national agenda, ensure necessary resources, and expand access for all.

MP Gangakumari Belbase demanded improved infrastructure and human resources at Bir Hospital to make services more efficient and accessible. Similarly, MP Gopi Bahadur Achhami drew attention to the hunger strike of Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality, who is protesting for environmental action under the slogan “Reduce the Impact of Climate Change, Use Eco-friendly Resources.”

MP Jag Prasad Sharma urged the government to promote good governance and curb corruption to strengthen the economy. He also called for national recognition of those contributing to nation-building on Republic and Constitution Days.

MP Tulsakumari Dahal stressed the urgent need to implement irrigation facilities in drought-prone areas, especially in Madhes Province, as committed by the Prime Minister and Home Minister. She highlighted the recent inauguration of the Ranimeeriya–Gulariya Irrigation Project, which is expected to irrigate 14,300 hectares of land and produce 4.71 megawatts of electricity.

MP Maya Prasad Sharma questioned the implementation status of various crucial resolutions passed by the Assembly, including those related to federalism, statute of limitations on sexual violence cases, Dalit rights, disability, road safety, senior citizens, inflation control, and drinking water.

MP Radheshyam Paswan expressed concern over reports of traffic police abusing motorcyclists in Chitwan and Pokhara under the guise of routine checks. He demanded accountability from concerned authorities.

Lastly, MP Sumitra BC drew attention to the increasing incidents of violence against women. She cited specific cases in Surkhet and Janakpur where women were murdered, and demanded swift justice and stronger action from the Home Ministry to protect women’s rights and safety across the country.
