Koshi CM stresses traffic safety, calls for action to curb road accidents

KATHMANDU: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has emphasized the government’s commitment to minimizing road accident risks through policy reforms and better traffic management.
Inaugurating “Traffic Safety Week 2082” in Biratnagar today — jointly organized by the Province Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law and the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Itahari — CM Karki said the provincial government is actively working to equip traffic police and implement effective accident-reduction measures.
He directed the Provincial Traffic Office to make public the progress made in reducing road accidents from the start of the new fiscal year (Shrawan 1).
He also urged public vehicle owners to monitor driver behavior and attitude, stressing that such vigilance can significantly reduce accidents.
Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Revati Raman Bhandari identified road accidents, drug abuse, and suicide as major social challenges in the province, and announced the launch of awareness campaigns to combat these issues.
Morang Chief District Officer Indra Dev Yadav, Acting Chief of the Provincial Police Office Govinda Adhikari, and DSP Santosh Shrestha of the Provincial Traffic Office also urged all stakeholders to act decisively to reduce the growing toll of road accidents.
As part of the week-long campaign, awareness programs and other events will be held across all 14 districts of the province.
According to the Provincial Traffic Office, 5,100 road accidents were recorded up to the end of Jestha in the current fiscal year, claiming 381 lives.
