Koirala NC President; Special Convention passes policies: Sharma

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Sunil Sharma has claimed that the ongoing special general convention of the party will only pass policies, not elect leaders.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after a meeting with Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s supporters in Kathmandu, Sharma said all efforts are focused on preventing the party from splitting.
The special general convention, called by NC General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwprakash Sharma, began on Sunday at Bhrikutimandap.
However, top leaders, including those from the party’s establishment, have not participated.
Meanwhile, Koirala’s supporters held a separate gathering, urging him to take steps to save the party from division.
Sharma emphasized that everyone wants to keep the party united and dismissed rumors suggesting Dr. Koirala had “surrendered.” He added that both factions are being approached to find a solution to prevent a split.
“The agenda for a special convention, if the regular general convention cannot be held, originally comes from our side. It has been hijacked midway. Our team has consistently said the convention should happen on time. The agenda is ours, after all,” Sharma said.
He further claimed that while Dr. Shekhar Koirala is set to become the party president, the special general convention will only approve policies.
The election of the party president is expected to take place during the regular general convention, likely scheduled for either Baisakh or Asar.
