Khamenei urges unity amid rising US tensions ahead of revolution anniversary
Khamenei emphasized reliance on resolve and resistance over military hardware such as missiles and aircraft.
KATHMANDU: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday called on Iranians to demonstrate unity and frustrate their adversaries, on the eve of the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, amid escalating tensions with the United States.
Addressing the nation on television, Khamenei emphasized reliance on resolve and resistance over military hardware such as missiles and aircraft.
His remarks come as Iran prepares nationwide rallies on Wednesday to mark the revolution’s victory.
“As long as the enemy is not frustrated, a nation remains at risk of oppression,” Khamenei said.
The speech comes amid heightened friction with Washington, fueled by U.S. military deployments in the Middle East and ongoing threats against Tehran.
Despite indirect nuclear talks between Iranian and American delegations in Muscat, Oman, last Friday, significant differences remain, leaving the prospects of an agreement uncertain.
The 1979 Islamic Revolution was a decisive moment that transformed Iran from a U.S.-backed monarchy into an Islamic Republic. Led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a diverse coalition of clerics, students, and secular activists toppled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was supported by the United States.
Diplomatic relations between Iran and the U.S. were severed after Iranian militants seized the American embassy in Tehran in 1980.
