KATHMANDU: The vibrant festival of colors, Holi (locally known as Fagu), officially began in the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday morning with the ceremonial erection of the Chir at Basantapur Durbar Square.

The three-tiered bamboo pole, decorated with colorful flags and cloth strips, was raised at the auspicious time of 7:15 AM to the south of the historic Gaddi Baithak.

With the installation of the Chir, the festive spirit of Holi spread across the valley, as devotees offered prayers, sprinkled vermilion powder, and exchanged greetings.

The tradition of erecting the Chir is observed every year on Fagun Shukla Ashtami, symbolizing the formal commencement of Holi celebrations in the Kathmandu Valley.

Following the ritual, locals and visitors gather around the Chir to celebrate by throwing colors and rejoicing together.

Holi, also celebrated as a spring festival, holds deep mythological and cultural significance in Nepali tradition. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring, bringing joy, renewal, and harmony among communities.

This year, Holi will be observed on March 2 in the Himalayan and hilly regions, while the festival will be celebrated on March 3 in the Terai/Madhesh districts.

The government has declared public holidays on both days in the respective regions to allow people to take part in the celebrations.
