KATHMANDU: To reinstate a constitutional monarchy and a Sanatan Hindu kingdom under a multi-party democratic system, the “Joint People’s Movement Committee” has announced a peaceful nationwide protest movement.

In an appeal released by the committee, signed by Coordinator Nawaraj Subedi, the movement is described as a peaceful civil resistance campaign aimed at ending corruption and misgovernance and reinstating the monarchy.

The statement emphasizes that the movement seeks to establish a new understanding that includes all ideologies and institutions by exercising constitutional rights to eliminate current prohibitions.

“This movement will be conducted peacefully to generate strong public pressure for the fulfillment of our demands. Civil disobedience and satyagraha will be the key modes of protest,” the statement reads.

The committee highlights that Nepal, founded under the leadership of King Prithvi Narayan Shah and never colonized, is now drowning in crisis, disorder, and corruption.

It claims that the country is at a critical juncture where change in governance and the restoration of peace and prosperity based on Prithvi Path’s foundation have become a necessity.

The committee accuses the government of preparing to use force against peaceful demonstrators. It refers to the government’s earlier announcements — including Prime Minister KP Oli’s Jestha 15 declaration of taking control over Kathmandu — as possible signs of violent suppression of peaceful protests. “These are indications that the government may again suppress human rights and democratic freedoms,” the appeal states.

Citing the violent suppression of the protest at Tinkune, the committee also warns of potential state-sponsored provocations aimed at inciting violence.

It urges human rights organizations and the media to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation.

“We reiterate our firm commitment to civil supremacy, democratic ideals, and the values of human rights,” the committee stated. “We appeal to all fellow Nepalis to uphold the dignity of peaceful protest and fully respect human rights during their participation. Our national goals and the people’s aspirations will be achieved through peaceful means.”
