KATHMANDU: Nepal, home to the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, has inspired countless stories, documentaries, and even Hollywood films.
However, for the first time, a Nepali film has been made that centers its narrative entirely around the iconic mountain.
The newly released Nepali movie, ‘Jerry on Top’, blends the adventure of climbing Everest with a romantic storyline, making the mountain the film’s central character.
Actor Anmol KC, who plays a young climber in the film, said the movie not only showcases Nepal’s scenic beauty but also promotes the country’s tourism to a global audience.
Visiting a cinema to gauge audience reactions, KC shared that portraying Everest realistically was the biggest challenge for the filmmakers.
“We spent a lot of time discussing how to depict Everest using Nepali resources and technology. Filming there is not easy, and we had to consider the investment carefully for the Nepali market. But with everyone’s hard work, we successfully completed the film,” KC said.
To ensure authenticity, actress Jasita Gurung, who plays the climber’s guide, underwent a month-long training to prepare for her role. KC added that scenes were filmed under the supervision of Sherpa experts to make the mountain environment and the characters’ actions look natural.
“This film brings together a family-friendly love story and the unique beauty of Mount Everest. I hope it inspires other filmmakers to explore Himalayan stories,” KC said.
Actress Gurung noted, “Playing a young woman closely connected to the mountains required proper preparation. Audiences will get to see the true beauty of Nepal’s Himalayan region throughout the film. It’s even more spectacular than the promotional clips released earlier.”
Actress Anchal Sharma said the movie, named in homage to the 11-year-old film ‘Jerry’, will attract a new generation of moviegoers. “When the original ‘Jerry’ was released, it became a popular discussion among youth. I am thrilled to work with the same actor and bring a similar energy to ‘Jerry on Top’,” Sharma said.
Presenter Saroj Neupane said the film aims to combine youth-centric storytelling with Nepal’s natural beauty. “We’ve showcased Nepal’s landscapes while following the protagonist’s Everest expedition. This will help promote tourism and is a proud moment for Nepali cinema,” he added.
The film features actors Anmol KC, Bhuwan KC, Anchal Sharma, Jasita Gurung, Kedar Ghimire ‘Magne Budha’, and Usha Khadgi.
Produced by Ananya Films Production, the film is directed by Suyog Gurung, with the story by Hemraj B.C., screenplay by Bishwa Timilsina, and cinematography by Dulip Regmi.
