KATHMANDU: Nepal’s film industry has recently seen a surge in movies rooted in local culture, and one standout example is Jaari.

Released in Baisakh 2080 (April 2023), the film became a blockbuster, grossing over Rs 170 million and running successfully for 101 days.

Directed by poet and writer Upendra Subba in his directorial debut, Jaari drew widespread acclaim for its portrayal of the Limbu community

Following its success, the much-anticipated sequel, Jaari 2: Song of Chyabrung, released on Friday, continuing the story that captured audiences nationwide.

The film features an ensemble cast including Dayahang Rai, Miruna Magar, Bijay Baral, Buddhi Tamang, Reecha Sharma, and Pushkar Gurung.

This time, the story emphasizes a unique character, the humanized ‘Chyabrung’, which emerges as the film’s central figure.

Picking up where the first film left off, the sequel follows Namsange, who now has a daughter with Hangma after winning her over in Palung.

Deeply curious about Limbu traditions, Namsange frequently consults Hangma about village customs.

The story begins when Hangma’s family gifts Namsange a ‘Chyabrung’, leading him to play it at local weddings day and night—bringing humor, conflict, and charm into their married life.
