KATHMANDU: Israeli forces have claimed to have killed a senior Hamas naval commander in a targeted strike in Gaza.

According to a joint statement by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the internal security agency, Yunus Mohammed Hussein Aliyan, who led Hamas’ naval unit in northern Gaza, was killed in Monday’s operation.

He was reportedly responsible for the unit’s operations, training, and weapons preparation.

The statement accused Aliyan of rebuilding his unit’s capabilities in recent weeks and planning potential attacks.

Israeli authorities said precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties during the strike.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent and local health sources reported that an airstrike in southern Gaza’s Al-Mawasi area on Tuesday killed three Palestinians and injured 14 others.

Gaza’s health authorities say that since Oct 7, 2023, the conflict has claimed 72,249 lives and left 171,898 people injured in the region.

The ongoing violence underscores the intensifying conflict in Gaza.
