KATHMANDU: Iranians took to the streets across the country to express support for the newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, following a major leadership change in Iran.

The demonstrations came a day after Iran’s Assembly of Experts officially announced Mojtaba as the successor to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Large public gatherings and celebratory events were organized in several major cities.

The main ceremony was held at Enghelab Square in the capital Tehran, where thousands of people, along with senior government officials, gathered to show their support.

Participants carried Iran’s national flags as well as portraits of Mojtaba and the late Ali Khamenei.

Mojtaba Khamenei has been widely viewed as the successor to Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed last month during a joint military operation by the United States and Israel.

During the rallies, demonstrators strongly condemned what they described as a “criminal” attack against Iran by the United States and Israel.

Protesters also pledged full loyalty to the new leader and voiced unwavering support for Iran’s armed forces against what they called foreign interference.

The announcement of Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership has sparked a new political wave across Iran.

Participants at the gatherings said they are ready to face any challenge to defend the country’s sovereignty, expressing confidence that Mojtba’s leadership will further strengthen Iran at this historic moment.
