Inmates escaped from Jhumka prison during Gen Z protest held

KATHMANDU: Dhankuta Police have apprehended eight inmates who had escaped from Jhumka Prison during the Gen Z protest, authorities confirmed.

According to the District Police Office, Dhankuta, a coordinated effort involving inter-district cooperation, intelligence gathering, and an active surveillance network led to the recapture of the fugitives. The arrested inmates were serving sentences for serious crimes including murder, bodily harm, rape, theft, and possession of cannabis.

They have now been returned to custody. Police Superintendent Sarat Kumar Thapa Chhetri stated that some fugitives were hiding near their homes, while others moved between locations in an attempt to evade capture.

The sentences of the captured inmates range from 12 years and 6 months, as in the case of Yubaraj Rai convicted of murder, to 25 years for Sagar Rai. Following the incident, security officials emphasized the need to review prison security systems, alert measures during protests, and inmate management protocols.

The police also highlighted the importance of stricter security standards, digital monitoring, and clear emergency action plans to prevent future escapes.

Authorities confirmed that all fugitives were processed according to legal procedures before being returned to prison.
