In pics: Shadow puppet play ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’

KATHMANDU: A shadow puppet theatre adaptation of the beloved folk tale The Hare and the Tortoise, familiar to generations since childhood, has begun regular performances in Kathmandu.
Presented through an artistic blend of shadow techniques, lighting, live music, and movement, the production reimagines the traditional story in a contemporary theatrical form.
The play creatively explores the conflict between patience, perseverance, and arrogance, bringing the timeless moral vividly to life on stage.
Before arriving in the capital, the play toured eastern districts of Nepal, where it was staged more than 35 times, including 10 public shows and 20 school performances, reaching an audience of nearly 4,000 people.
It is now being presented in Kathmandu by Ek Theatre Nepal.
Directed by Anil Subba, the cast features Saujan Senehang, Sanjit Thulung, Ajay Lama, Shishir Giri, Numa Rai, Aakash Suhang Limbu, and Ramita Rai. Live music is performed by Prabriti Rai, adding depth and rhythm to the visual storytelling.
The Hare and the Tortoise will be staged from Poush 25 to Magh 5, with daily evening shows at 5:15 pm and an additional Saturday matinee at 1:00 pm, at Ek Theatre Studio in Mid-Baneshwor, Kathmandu.
