KATHMANDU: The opening session of the special general convention organized by a faction within the Nepali Congress advocating for a special convention has officially begun at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu.
The event was inaugurated by party General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
Ahead of the inauguration, party leaders and cadres from various parts of the Kathmandu Valley gathered and entered the venue in rallies, accompanied by traditional music, cultural displays, and decorative processions.
A large stage has been set up at the open ground of Bhrikutimandap for the opening ceremony, with thousands of party leaders and supporters in attendance.
The venue has been decorated with party flags, gates, banners, and promotional materials.
The convention is being chaired by Krishna Sabuj Baniya, Chair of the Nepali Congress Kathmandu.
Following the opening session, the closed-door session is scheduled to begin on Poush 28 at the Bhrikutimandap conference hall.
Earlier, on Ashoj 29, a formal application demanding a special general convention was submitted to the party’s central office, bearing signatures of 54.58 percent of the party’s general convention representatives.
However, the party’s establishment faction has expressed its disagreement with the move.
The establishment side maintains that the process for the regular general convention has already begun with a fixed schedule, rendering the demand for a special convention unnecessary.
