HM Lekhak indicates resignation over protest casualties

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has hinted that he will step down from his position.
During a meeting of Nepali Congress office bearers and former office bearers at party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha, Lekhak expressed his desire to resign, citing moral responsibility.
According to a participant in the meeting, Lekhak said he felt compelled to take responsibility for the significant loss of life during Monday’s protest.
“Today’s protest caused a major human tragedy. I must take moral responsibility for it. On moral grounds, I will not continue in this position,” Lekhak was quoted as saying.
Although he has not submitted a formal written resignation, Lekhak has already indicated in internal party discussions that he is prepared to step down.
Following Monday’s violent clashes in the capital, the security apparatus under Lekhak’s leadership has faced widespread criticism.
