KATHMANDU: Jasamaya Rai, mother of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang, has been selected to receive this year’s ‘Maulashobha Rai Aama Award’ for giving birth to a son who has become a symbol of labor, good governance, and development.
The selection committee, chaired by Dr. Sukaraj Rai, unanimously chose Jasamaya Rai during a meeting held in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
Dr. Rai explained that the award seeks to honor mothers who give birth to individuals with exemplary and influential personalities, both nationally and internationally.
He also expressed gratitude to the award’s founder, Dr. Puran Rai, for initiating this unique and commendable effort.
Speaking at the award announcement ceremony, Dr. Dhanprasad Subedi, Secretary of the Nepal Academy, described the initiative as a joyful and innovative way to recognize mothers of notable personalities.
Similarly, Prof. Dr. Bishnu Rai and Om Shrestha ‘Rodan’, Chair of the Nepal Creator Society, emphasized that honoring parents while they are alive sends a positive message to society, highlighting that respect and love during life are more meaningful than posthumous rituals.
Dr. Puran Rai, who established the award in 2080 BS in honor of his mother, Maulashobha Rai, said he was inspired by the Mundhumi cultural practice of worshipping one’s grandmother, known as ‘Machha Kuma’. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 50,000.
Last year, the award was presented to Vimala Rai (Sampang), mother of writer and poet Deepa Rai, who gave birth to an inspiring figure in the literary field.
The award is announced annually on Dr. Rai’s birthday, followed by a special ceremony to honor the recipient.
