Gurung-centric movie ‘Reemai’ premieres ahead of nationwide release

KATHMANDU: The film ‘Reemai’ held a grand premiere on Wednesday, ahead of its nationwide release set for Friday, Bhadra 20 (Sept 5).

The event took place at Ranjana Cineplex, New Road, drawing a strong turnout of film industry professionals, journalists, and media personalities.

The premiere began with a cultural showcase featuring the Gurung community’s traditional Sorathi dance, with lead actors Dayahang Rai and Rishma Gurung appearing in traditional Gurung attire.

Prominent figures including directors Gyanendra Deuja, Deepak Acharya (Kaku), Anil Yonjan, and actors Wilson Bikram Rai, Rohit Rumba, among others, attended the event.

After watching the film, actor-turned-director Wilson Bikram Rai praised Reemai as a touching and heartfelt film, noting that it is one of the best films made about the Gurung community to date.

Similarly, actor and director Mautse Gurung appreciated the film, emphasizing its importance in representing the community and urging audiences from all backgrounds to watch it.

Lead actress Rishma Gurung, making a comeback after nearly eight years, shared her excitement and emotional experience of seeing the film. “I have been living in the U.S. for a long time, where the Nepali community is small. Watching Reemai today felt like reconnecting with everything I missed. The film is beautifully made, and the reunion of Kaji and Maiya on screen will surely captivate audiences,” she said.

Director Khil Bahadur Gurung expressed his satisfaction at the outcome of three years of dedicated work on Reemai. “We have created this film with complete sincerity. The response from today’s premiere makes me confident that audiences will appreciate it and that it will succeed commercially,” he remarked.

Produced by Gorkha Siran Chok & Ligligkot Films Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with Rotepping Entertainment, Reemai features an ensemble cast including Dayahang Rai, Arpan Thapa, Rishma Gurung, Gaumaya Gurung, Kavita Ale Magar, Mautse Gurung, Pushkar Gurung, Birmaya Gurung, Birbal Ghale, Devi Gurung, Tek Gurung, and child actors Asim Subba, Prestu Gurung, and Prashna Rana Magar.

The screenplay is written by poet-director Upendra Subba, with cinematography by Shailendra Dhwaj Karki and executive production by Birbal Ghale.

The film’s producers include Tika Gurung, Jit Yatri Gurung, and Duna Bahadur Ghale, with co-producers Binu Gurung, Roshan Bhattarai, and Rajesh Ghimire.

The music is composed by Deepak Sharma and Thaneshwar Gautam, editing by Mitra D. Gurung, and Kiran Chamling Rai serves as the chief assistant director.
