KATHMANDU: The government has announced a plan to provide a monthly housing allowance of Rs 15,000 to genuine squatters until they are issued land ownership certificates (lalpurja).

Officials informed the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives on Thursday that the measure is intended as an interim housing solution while the verification and land allocation process continues.

According to Committee Chair Hari Dhakal, representatives from the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration presented updates on ongoing efforts to manage squatters.

They said a screening process is currently underway to identify landless people residing in holding centers across Kathmandu.

The government aims to distribute land ownership certificates through a “fast-track” process immediately after the screening is completed.

The Urban Development Ministry also assured the committee that necessary financial resources for the program have already been secured.

In addition, authorities said arrangements have been made for school transportation for children living in holding centers and nutritional support for pregnant women.

The committee has decided to conduct on-site monitoring to better understand the actual situation and evaluate the government’s progress on the ground.
