KATHMANDU: The government has issued a high alert after continuous heavy rainfall across various parts of the country caused water levels in major rivers to rise above danger levels.

Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh has directed the immediate deployment of security personnel in high-risk areas to prevent potential loss of life and property.

An emergency meeting was convened on Monday after water levels in the Rapti, Babai, and Bheri rivers crossed the danger mark.

The meeting, called by Acting Prime Minister Singh, included key officials such as Engineer Dinesh Prasad Bhatta, Executive Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), who confirmed the Prime Minister’s serious concern over the situation.

“The meeting was held primarily due to rising water levels in the Rapti and Babai rivers,” said Chief Bhatt. “Discussions were also held regarding the overall disaster situation and rainfall data from across the country.”

Special warnings have been issued for the Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces, where rainfall is expected to intensify. Acting Prime Minister Singh has instructed Chief District Officers and security agencies in the affected areas—including Rapti, Babai, Karnali, and Mahakali river regions—to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions.

Forecasts also indicate a possible rise in water levels in the Mahakali and Karnali rivers on Tuesday, prompting further alerts for those regions.

The Acting Prime Minister also expressed concern about the situation in Madhesh Province, where local authorities provided updates on the current conditions.

In light of the potential dangers, the government has urged residents in riverbank settlements to move to safer locations, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly follow notices issued by local authorities and security agencies.
