Gen Z protests have severely hit Nepal’s economy: Hemraj Dhakal
Highlighting past economic growth, he noted that while the economy showed positive growth rates previously, continuity was lacking.
KATHMANDU: Hemraj Dhakal, Vice Chair of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), has warned that the recent Gen Z protests have caused significant damage to Nepal’s economy.
Speaking at a discussion on “The Path to Economic Revival,” organized by the Nepal Economic Journalists’ Association on Tuesday, Dhakal highlighted that both public and private sectors suffered structural setbacks, and investor confidence has been severely shaken.
Dhakal noted that although the government has pledged to encourage investors in post-protest dialogues, it must provide a guarantee that such disruptive events will not recur. “The Gen Z protests have discouraged investors. We have had discussions with the government, and they have promised support. We can move forward cautiously now, but what guarantee do we have that such destruction won’t happen again? The government must assure our security,” he said.
He emphasized that the private sector continues to invest in institutional social responsibility and expects the government to build confidence accordingly. “We are currently in a recovering phase, and to rise further, the government must introduce new policies. The private sector also needs to progress responsibly,” Dhakal added.
Highlighting past economic growth, he noted that while the economy showed positive growth rates previously, continuity was lacking.
In the present scenario, he stressed that coordinated efforts and concrete action plans between the government and private sector are crucial for economic revival.
