The clashes intensified after demonstrators attempted to storm the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor.
Protesters vandalized the compound wall, set fire to a police quarter on the southern side of the building, and torched an Armed Police Force ambulance.
Security forces and protesters clashed repeatedly throughout the day as demonstrators encircled the Parliament building and tried to force entry multiple times.
So far, 19 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 300 have been reported injured.
Casualties are receiving treatment at various hospitals, including NIMST Hospital, Everest Hospital, Trauma Center, and Bir Hospital.
Four journalists covering the protest were also injured.
Injured security personnel, many struck by stones, bricks, and glass bottles, were initially treated at the Parliament’s medical unit, where Dr. Pushparaj Rizal reported being overwhelmed by the number of cases.
Severely wounded officers were later referred to Nepal Police Hospital for advanced care.
Despite the violence, police said the situation across Kathmandu Valley and the rest of the country has now returned to relative calm.
