Fire in Budhanilkantha leaves 24 families displaced

KATHMANDU: A devastating fire that broke out late Tuesday night in Naya Basti, Chunikhel, Budhanilkantha Municipality–13, has left 24 underprivileged families homeless and caused extensive property damage.
The blaze erupted suddenly at around 10:45 pm, quickly spreading through a large section of the settlement where families had been living in temporary shacks.
As the fire intensified and threatened to spiral out of control, seven people trapped inside the burning area were rescued safely in a swift operation.
Fire engines from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Budhanilkantha Municipality, and Tokha Municipality were immediately deployed to the scene.
With the combined efforts of firefighters, security personnel, and local residents, the inferno was brought under control after nearly two and a half hours of continuous efforts, finally being extinguished at around 1:15 am on Wednesday.
According to Ward Chairperson Tika Narayan Shrestha, a long shed comprising 24 rooms was completely destroyed in the fire. “All 24 families, who had migrated from different districts and were living here on rent, have lost their homes. They are now facing severe hardship,” he said.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
However, police officials said a formal inspection and damage assessment will be conducted on Wednesday to determine the exact cause and quantify the losses.
Following the incident, the displaced families have been temporarily relocated to nearby safer shelters.
The ward office has intensified preparations to provide immediate relief, including food supplies, clothing, and other essential materials, to support the affected families during this difficult time.
Authorities have assured that further assistance and coordination will continue as investigations proceed and relief efforts are expanded.
