Ex-UML leader Gupta quits, cites corruption & leadership failures
Gupta said he decided to leave after witnessing the party-led government under KP Sharma Oli crack down on the Gen Z movement on Sept 8–9, and seeing major parties act with unchecked arrogance.
KATHMANDU: Former central member of CPN-UML and four-time federal lawmaker from Kapilvastu, Brijesh Kumar Gupta, has resigned from the party, citing a lack of signs that the UML leadership is improving.
Gupta said he decided to leave after witnessing the party-led government under KP Sharma Oli crack down on the Gen Z movement on Sept 8–9, and seeing major parties act with unchecked arrogance.
The former federal minister also accused the UML leadership of prioritizing the protection of corruption over good governance. “The party’s focus, activities, and culture are centered on shielding corrupt practices rather than promoting proper governance. That left me with no choice but to quit,” Gupta said. “The leadership takes credit for good work but never acknowledges mistakes or shortcomings. That pattern repeated itself, prompting my resignation.”
He submitted his resignation while in India and did not participate in the party’s recent general convention.
Gupta added that he is currently consulting his constituents and well-wishers about his future political alignment. While he has received offers from several parties, he has not yet joined any.
