KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, has emphasized that energy is as essential to human life as oxygen, stating it forms the backbone of national prosperity.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Monday during discussions on budget allocation, Minister Khadka said energy is no longer just a matter of infrastructure but the very foundation of a prosperous Nepal.

He shared the government’s ambitious target of generating 28,500 megawatts of electricity within the next ten years.

Out of the total projected capacity, 13,500 MW will be allocated for domestic consumption, while 15,000 MW will be dedicated to export.

Nepal has already secured agreements to export 10,000 MW to India and 40 MW to Bangladesh.

According to the minister, exports to Bangladesh could potentially reach up to 15,000 MW, based on demand and grid capacity.

“Energy has become like oxygen in our lives. Ensuring long-term energy security through self-reliance in electricity is a national responsibility,” said Minister Khadka, underscoring the strategic importance of energy in driving sustainable development.

To meet this target, the government estimates a total investment requirement of USD 98.9 billion, indicating the scale of commitment needed to transform Nepal into a regional energy powerhouse.
