KATHMANDU: The election for the chairperson of the National Assembly is scheduled for today.

A meeting is set to commence at 11:00 AM to move forward with the election proceedings.

Under the election process, candidates were registered yesterday.

The ruling coalition has nominated Narayan Dahal as its candidate, while the Nepali Congress has also registered its candidate, Member of Parliament Yuvaraj Sharma.

Furthermore, the National Assembly comprises 18 members, including a nominated Vice-Chairperson, representing the Maoist Center.

Additionally, there are 10 members representing the CPN-UML, and three representing the Janata Samajwadi Party.

Another coalition partner, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, does not have a presence in the National Assembly.

With a Vice-Chairperson, the ruling coalition holds 39 seats.

The principal opposition party, the Nepali Congress, has 16 members in the National Assembly.

There is one member from the Rastriya Janamorcha and a nominated member appointed by the President, Vamdev Gautam. Gautam has not disclosed where he will cast his vote.

Accordingly, with 39 members, the ruling coalition is poised to win the election for the National Assembly chair.

From the coalition, Narayan Dahal is set to become the National Assembly Chair. Dahal is the brother of Prime Minister Prachanda in relation.

It is anticipated that Dahal will easily assume the role of Chairperson without any political upheaval by 11 AM today.
