KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal has appealed to all political parties and candidates participating in the House of Representatives Election 2082 to refrain from involving children in election campaigns.

In a statement issued today, the commission emphasized that children should not be used in activities such as carrying party flags or election symbols, performing in cultural programs, participating in rallies, or wearing clothing and accessories marked with party logos or symbols.

The commission’s appeal comes after complaints were received about children being involved in campaign activities near schools, disrupting their studies, and participating in election-related programs during school hours.

According to Article 13, Subsection (1), Clause (T) of the Election Code, 2082, “Children must not be used in election campaigns, rallies, or public assemblies.” Violating this code may result in fines of up to Rs 100,000 or even disqualification of candidacy, the commission’s spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai warned.

The statement also noted that involving children in political campaigns violates the Constitution of Nepal, the Child Rights Act, and the election code.

The commission urged all political parties, candidates, and voters to ensure that children are not exploited in any form during political activities and that their education is not disrupted.

Further, the Election Commission has called on the federal, provincial, and local governments to protect and promote the rights of children, ensuring their proper implementation in line with the law.
