Diktel Mayor Bhattarai starts hunger strike demanding use of local raw materials
Bhattarai called on the government to address his demands and urged national human rights bodies and other organizations to raise their voices for citizens’ fundamental right to live.
KATHMANDU: Tirtharaj Bhattarai, the Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majuwagadhi Municipality in Khotang, has started a hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala, Kathmandu, from Sunday, urging the government to reduce the use of imported materials by increasing reliance on local raw materials.
Bhattarai called on the government to address his demands and urged national human rights bodies and other organizations to raise their voices for citizens’ fundamental right to live.
Citing neglect by the federal government despite repeated written and verbal requests, he stated that federal laws have hindered the use of local raw materials, prompting him to initiate the strike with seven key demands.
He also demanded strict security arrangements at the site of his protest and requested the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, to send a representative to assure the state’s commitment to his hunger strike.
Bhattarai emphasized, “If my demands are not met, I am prepared to sacrifice my life. I have not eaten anything in broad daylight or after sunset. There are fundamental principles at stake. Therefore, I request a representative be sent to ensure transparency of my strike. I urge the federal negotiation committee to respect the sentiments, beliefs, and culture of my local government, which aims to protect farmers, the Himalayas, the environment, and our religion and culture. They should fulfill my concrete demands without unnecessary bargaining.”
He further stated that when the voices of the grassroots people remain unheard by the government, protests in the federal government’s own courtyard become inevitable.
