KATHMANDU: Dense fog and mist have been affecting daily life in Janakpur in recent days.

This seasonal phenomenon, common in the Terai region during winter, has become particularly troublesome this year.

Morning visibility has dropped significantly, slowing traffic and making driving difficult even with headlights on, increasing the risk of accidents.

Janakpur Airport has also faced flight disruptions due to the fog, following closures at other Terai airports, including Bhairahawa and Simara, caused by adverse weather.

The fog and cold have delayed people’s arrival at markets, schools, and offices.

Hospitals report a rise in patients with respiratory issues, with the elderly and children being the most affected.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the fog and mist are likely to persist for several days.

Authorities have urged people to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Residents have expressed frustration over the disruption to their daily lives and called for local government support, suggesting arrangements like controlled fires in public spaces to help people stay warm.

The cold and fog have also slowed trade and made it difficult for people to leave their homes.

Until the weather improves, daily life in Janakpur and other Terai towns is expected to remain affected.
