KATHMANDU: Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings on Monday in Dharamshala.

Chasing a daunting target of 211, Delhi produced a sensational batting display to reach 216/7 in just 19 overs and seal a dramatic win with one over to spare.

The defeat marked Punjab’s fourth consecutive loss in the tournament.

Earlier, Punjab posted a formidable 210/5 in their 20 overs after a blazing start from Priyansh Arya.

The young opener attacked from the outset, smashing boundaries and sixes at will, including a huge hit off Mitchell Starc in the opening over.

Punjab raced to 51 without loss in just three overs as Arya dominated the powerplay.

Arya brought up his half-century in only 24 balls and eventually scored 56 off 33 deliveries, hammering six sixes and two fours.

However, Delhi fought back through Aqib Nabi and Mukesh Kumar, slowing Punjab’s momentum during the middle overs.

Prabhsimran Singh contributed 18 from 15 balls before being dismissed, while Punjab slipped to 97/2 after nine overs.

Captain Shreyas Iyer then steadied the innings with a commanding knock. Mixing elegant strokeplay with powerful hitting, Iyer remained unbeaten on 59 off 32 balls after reaching his fifty in style.

Late fireworks from Suryansh Shedge helped Punjab cross the 200-run mark.

Delhi’s chase began poorly as Yash Thakur struck in his very first appearance, dismissing Abishek Porel, before Arshdeep Singh removed KL Rahul. Delhi lost three wickets inside the powerplay and were struggling at 33/3.

The recovery came through captain Axar Patel and David Miller, who stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership off just 34 balls.

Axar Patel led the counterattack with a blistering half-century, scoring 56 runs, including four sixes and three boundaries.

With Delhi still needing 36 runs from the final three overs, Ashutosh Sharma, Madhav Tiwari and Aqib Nabi produced a fearless finish to swing the contest decisively in Delhi’s favour.

Delhi eventually completed one of the season’s most exciting run chases, winning by three wickets and keeping their IPL playoff ambitions alive.
