KATHMANDU: The leadership of Nepal Police has officially changed hands as Dan Bahadur Karki assumed office today as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Karki took command after the retirement of outgoing IGP Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, who completed his mandatory 30-year service period at midnight yesterday.

The Cabinet meeting on Kartik 25 had decided to appoint Karki as the new head of Nepal Police.

He formally assumed office today after receiving his insignia from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Widely regarded within the organization as an honest and experienced officer, IGP Karki brings decades of field and administrative experience to the post.

As a Deputy Inspector General (DIG), he led the Lumbini Province Police Office and, earlier as a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), commanded the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range.

During his tenure, he dealt with several sensitive cases, including the high-profile Bhutanese refugee scam.

More recently, on Bhadra 24, when the Gen Z movement escalated in Kathmandu Valley, Karki was entrusted with the Valley command. Before that, he served as head of the Human Resource Department at Police Headquarters.

Known for his clean image and integrity, Karki has never been linked to financial controversies.

His career spans both field operations and administrative leadership, including a tenure as the central spokesperson for Nepal Police.

Having received multiple international trainings, he steps into the top post at a time when the organization faces growing law enforcement and public trust challenges.

Karki’s appointment is seen as an opportunity for stability and reform within the Nepal Police, as he is expected to steer the force through a period of increasing public scrutiny and complex policing demands.
