KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has said that the police administration represents the face of the government in the eyes of the public.

Speaking at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee meeting on Wednesday, Dahal emphasized that police and peacekeeping are closely interconnected, stating that the public’s first impression of government performance comes from their experience with the police.

“If the police perform well, the people perceive the government positively,” he said, adding that while leadership at the top level appears satisfactory, experiences at the grassroots level are often bitter.

Highlighting negative experiences encountered on the ground, Dahal stressed the need to revise and strengthen the law governing Nepal Police to address such issues. “This is about strengthening democracy and ensuring public service delivery. When people think of the government, they first look at the police. Unfortunately, our experience at the field level is not very encouraging. We must explore measures to fix this,” he remarked.

He also underscored the importance of initiating a broader debate to enhance the republican system through legal reform.

Wednesday’s committee session held a theoretical discussion on the bill to amend existing laws related to Nepal Police.
