KATHMANDU: Narayan Dahal and Yuvaraj Sharma have submitted their nominations for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.
Dahal, representing the ruling coalition, and Sharma, the candidate from the Congress party, submitted their nominations a few minutes earlier.

Dahal’s candidacy is backed by Gopi Sarki Achami from the Maoist party, Devendra Dahal from UML, Beduram Bhusal from the Unified Socialist Party, and Mohammad Khalid from JSP.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s nomination is supported by Ananda Prasad Dhungana from the Congress party, as well as Kiran Babu Shrestha and Shekhar Kumar Singh from the Congress and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) respectively.

The election for the Speaker of the National Assembly is scheduled to take place during the Assembly meeting on Tuesday.

With the ruling coalition holding a majority in the National Assembly, comprising 39 MPs including 17 from the Maoist party, 10 from UML, 8 from Unified Samajwadi, and 3 from JSP, they have a significant advantage.

A minimum of 30 MPs is required to nominate the Chair of the National Assembly.

Earlier, the Congress made Krishna Prasad Sitaula a member of the National Assembly by making him the Speaker of the National Assembly.

However, after the alliance with the Maoists broke up, the Congress put forward Sharma as a candidate.

That party has 16 MPs.
