Curfew in Kathmandu extended (notice inside)

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Administration Office has extended the curfew imposed in sensitive areas of the capital.

Initially enforced until 10 p.m. on Monday, the restriction will now remain in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

According to an order issued by Chief District Officer (CDO) Chhabilal Rijal, the curfew will continue around major government and state institutions, including Sheetal Niwas (President’s Office) in Maharajgunj, Harit Griha (Vice President’s Office) in Lainchaur, Narayanhiti Palace Museum, Singha Durbar, the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, and the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor. Public movement in these areas is strictly prohibited.

The curfew zone in New Baneshwor has been significantly widened.

The restricted area now extends:

  • West: From Baneshwor Chowk through Everest Hotel to Bijulibazar Bridge

  • East: From Minbhawan and Shantinagar to Tinkune Chowk

  • North: From Iplex Mall to Ratna Rajya Secondary School

  • South: From Shankhamul Downhill to Shankhamul Bridge

The order was issued under Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028 (1971). Earlier, the administration had announced a curfew from 12:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday.

CDO Rijal clarified that the move aims to maintain law and order by banning gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, assemblies, sit-ins, and blockades.

The administration stressed that the step was necessary to prevent any untoward incidents amid the current tense security situation in Kathmandu.

The public has been urged to avoid restricted zones during the curfew period and to cooperate with the authorities.
