Curacao eye Germany upset as Ivory Coast face Ecuador
Once considered automatic favorites in global tournaments, Germany enters this World Cup without the usual “top contender” tag after back-to-back early group-stage exits in previous editions.
KATHMANDU: Four-time champions Germany begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey on Sunday against debutants Curaçao, with the clear objective of avoiding what would be one of the tournament’s biggest early upsets.
Once considered automatic favorites in global tournaments, Germany enters this World Cup without the usual “top contender” tag after back-to-back early group-stage exits in previous editions.
That history has placed added psychological pressure on the squad ahead of their opening fixture in the United States.
Despite the scrutiny, Germany arrive in strong form, winning all nine of their recent matches. In 2026 pre-tournament friendlies, they defeated Switzerland, Ghana, Finland, and co-hosts the United States, reinforcing confidence within the camp.
After facing Curaçao, Germany will meet Ivory Coast and Ecuador in Group E. While their qualification path still appears manageable, another group-stage elimination would be a major shock, especially under the expanded format that offers additional routes to the knockout stage.
Germany’s squad depth remains one of their biggest strengths, featuring stars such as Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and Florian Wirtz. Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is expected to lead the attack, bringing experience and a strong scoring record for the national side.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has been dealing with a minor calf issue, is still expected to start. At 40, his presence continues to be a key leadership factor for the team.
Curaçao, meanwhile, enter the match with little pressure but high ambition. Under coach Dick Advocaat, they secured their first-ever World Cup qualification through an unbeaten run in the CONCACAF qualifiers. Ranked 82nd in the world, Curaçao will view even a single point against Germany as a historic achievement.
The Caribbean side’s recent friendlies include a heavy 4–1 defeat to Scotland and a convincing 4–0 win over Aruba, reflecting both vulnerability and attacking potential. Captain Leandro Bacuna will anchor the midfield, supported by his brother Juninho Bacuna.
In the other Group E fixture, Ivory Coast and Ecuador will face each other on Monday morning at 4:45 AM, setting the tone for a highly competitive group stage.
