KATHMANDU: A ward chair elected from the Nepali Congress has been sent to judicial custody in a human trafficking case, following a court order in Kathmandu.
Shivbahadur Thapa, the elected ward chair of Putalibazar Municipality–4, Syangja, has been remanded to jail for trial after the Kathmandu District Court ordered his detention.
The decision was issued by Judge Thakur Prasad Kharel on Jestha 25, in a case filed under Nepal’s Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Act, based on a complaint by Tenji Sherpa against him.
According to the complaint, Thapa allegedly took financial payments promising to send Sherpa to the United States, later moving her through multiple countries and abandoning her abroad before returning to Nepal.
He was arrested by the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau from Kathmandu in late Baisakh.
After winning the 2079 local elections, Thapa served around 15 months as ward chair before stepping back from active duties in 15 Bhadra 2080, handing responsibilities to an acting representative while reportedly staying in Kathmandu.
