Congress & UML deny move to impeach Deputy Speaker Rana
On Tuesday, both parties reportedly had their MPs sign blank sheets, sparking speculation that it was related to a potential impeachment motion.
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have denied reports that their MPs were made to sign a motion to impeach Deputy Speaker Indira Rana.
On Tuesday, both parties reportedly had their MPs sign blank sheets, sparking speculation that it was related to a potential impeachment motion.
However, party officials clarified that this was not the case.
Congress Chief Whip Shyamkumar Ghimire stated that while MPs may be asked to sign for parliamentary purposes, it does not mean an impeachment motion is imminent. “Reports claiming a motion is being filed against the Deputy Speaker for misconduct are incorrect. Current discussions are focused on clearing stalled bills,” he said.
Similarly, UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula clarified that MPs’ signatures were not for an impeachment motion.
He noted that the Deputy Speaker had sent letters arranging for some individuals to attend an unrelated event in the U.S., which was raised in Parliament, but the party has not decided on impeachment. “Any decision regarding a motion rests with Parliament, not the government. Accusations must be addressed fairly,” he added.
