Congress leaders stress need for new leadership to propel party forward

KATHMANDU: Leaders of the Nepali Congress have emphasized the necessity of selecting new leadership to move the party forward.

Speaking at the closing session of the special convention led by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwprakash Sharma, participants stressed that there is no alternative to reforming both party policies and leadership.

Wanshalal Tamang, a convention delegate from Sindhupalchowk, said, “Our conclusion is that the party must choose new leadership.

We organized this special convention to bring young leaders into the forefront, including for the upcoming elections.” He added, “Both the party’s policies and leadership will change. We are participating in the special convention with the aim of selecting leadership centered on election preparedness.”

Bishnu Khadka, a delegate from Bara, said, “We have agreed to move forward by changing both policies and leadership. The suggestion ‘whose policy, that leadership’ will be approved. Group discussions are ongoing, and based on the suggestions presented in the closing session, political and organizational reports will be adopted. This special convention is conducted as per party rules because a regular convention could not be held.”

Sitaram Bhandari from Mahottari urged the current party leadership to resign immediately to clear the path for new leadership, noting that the existing leaders, including Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, no longer hold moral or legal authority to remain in office. “This convention is result-oriented.
