KATHMANDU: Cape Verde, competing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time, continued their remarkable run with a 0–0 draw against Saudi Arabia, sealing a historic place in the Round of 32.

In Friday’s match in Houston, Cape Verde held firm once again as Spain defeated Uruguay 1–0 in the other Group H fixture. The results confirmed Cape Verde’s qualification as group runners-up, finishing behind Spain in a tightly contested group.

The Atlantic island nation, with a population of around half a million and ranked 67th in the FIFA standings before the tournament, remained unbeaten throughout the group stage. Their disciplined performances earned them a stunning second-place finish and a spot in the knockout phase.

Spain topped Group H with seven points, while Cape Verde secured second place with three points. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were both eliminated after finishing on two points each.

Cape Verde will now face defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3 in the Round of 32, marking another major test in their fairy-tale campaign.

Spain, meanwhile, will meet the runner-up of Group J—either Algeria or Austria—in the next round.

Head coach Bubista made five changes to his lineup for the decisive match, though experienced goalkeeper Vozinha retained his place.

The 40-year-old has been instrumental throughout the tournament, delivering standout performances, including a crucial clean sheet against European champions Spain and a resilient display in a 2–2 draw with Uruguay.

Against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde created the clearer chances. Wili Semedo came close with a shot that narrowly missed the post, while Jamiro Monteiro and Kevin Pina both tested the opposition with efforts just off target.

Saudi Arabia suffered a setback when defender Hassan Al-Tambakti was forced off injured in the first half.

Despite late pressure and a series of missed opportunities, Cape Verde held on for the draw they needed.

The result completed one of the most inspiring debut campaigns in World Cup history, as the nation advanced to the knockout stage in their first-ever appearance on football’s biggest stage.
