KATHMANDU: The political atmosphere in Rupandehi Constituency-3 is heating up following the demise of MP Deepak Bohara.

The Election Commission has announced Kartik 17 as the date for the by-election, prompting the ruling party, CPN-UML, to accelerate its candidate selection process.

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has initiated the formal candidate recommendation process by sending directives to the party’s district and provincial committees.

According to UML Central Office Secretary Bhishma Adhikari, a letter dispatched on Wednesday has instructed the committees to recommend three potential candidates—including at least one woman—by the Bhadra 15.

The district committee will notify the respective constituency coordination committees to suggest names.

These recommendations will be reviewed by the district and provincial committees, and the final list will be forwarded to the party’s central office.

The UML Central Secretariat will then select one candidate for final approval.

In the 2022 general election held on Mangsir 4, 2079, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) senior leader Deepak Bohara had won the Rupandehi-3 seat with the backing of UML.

However, following his untimely death on Chaitra 19, the seat has remained vacant.

This time, UML is preparing to field its own candidate, drawing significant attention to the upcoming by-election, especially after its previous alliance with RPP in the region.
