KATHMANDU: Despite being equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bhojpur Hospital remains non-operational due to a lack of medical staff.

The only government hospital in the district headquarters had its ICU built five years ago with a federal government investment of around Rs 20 million.

However, the facility has yet to be put into use, as the hospital has been unable to recruit the necessary personnel, even on a contractual basis, Hospital Chief Dr. Pavitra Shrestha said.

“Although the ICU was ready five years ago, a shortage of qualified staff has prevented its operation,” Dr. Shrestha explained.

Citizens’ group coordinator Parshuram Tiwari emphasized the need to make such facilities operational for public health. “The government’s inability to manage human resources in remote hospitals is affecting healthcare services. Bhojpur Hospital is a clear example of this,” he said.

Despite significant investment in infrastructure, residents of the district still have to travel to facilities in Dharan, Biratnagar, or Kathmandu for advanced medical care due to the ongoing staff shortage.
