Basnet proposes budget cut over unjust road fund allocation
He argued that despite an overall rise in the ministry’s budget, several constituencies were left without any allocation for road infrastructure development.
KATHMANDU: Shakti Bahadur Basnet, a lawmaker from the main opposition party CPN (Maoist Centre), has proposed a symbolic cut of one rupee in the allocation for the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport under the Appropriation Bill, 2082.
Tabling the proposal during today’s House of Representatives session, MP Basnet criticized the ministry for failing to allocate its increased budget fairly and responsibly.
He argued that despite an overall rise in the ministry’s budget, several constituencies were left without any allocation for road infrastructure development.
“In some electoral constituencies, there isn’t a single rupee allocated for roads. What could be more irresponsible than that?” said Basnet. “Even the budgets for major national corridors have been slashed. How can it be just when certain districts receive excessive funding while others get nothing at all?”
Basnet’s statement underscores growing concerns over the government’s budget distribution practices, especially in the infrastructure sector.
