KATHMANDU: Popular Nepali actress Barsha Raut is all set to make her mark on the Indian film industry with her first lead role in a Hindi feature film.

She recently signed the contract in Kathmandu for ‘Rimjhim Gire Sawan’, a social drama set in the scenic yet challenging hills of Lachung, North Sikkim.

Since her breakthrough in the 2016 blockbuster ‘Nai Nabhannu La 4’, Barsha has been a dominant force in Nepali cinema, delivering hits such as ‘Chhakka Panja’, ‘Jatra’, ‘Jatrai Jatra’, and ‘Daal Bhaat Tarkari’.

While she remains a household name in Nepal, this film marks her first full-length lead role in a foreign language project, positioning her as a significant talent representing Nepal on the global stage.

‘Rimjhim Gire Sawan’ explores the intense story of Rimjhim Chhetri, a married woman and mother sentenced to death, delving into themes of systemic corruption, justice, and a woman’s resilience in the face of harsh realities.

Directed by the versatile Arnab Paul, known for both crime thrillers like ‘Taantrik’ and emotional sagas such as ‘Meghmallar’, the film brings together a stellar cast and crew.

Paul has previously received international acclaim for ‘Brishti Tomakey Dilam’, winning Best Director at prestigious festivals including the Nepal International Film Festival and the Santiago International Global Film Awards.

The confirmed cast includes Bollywood veterans Subrat Dutta, Rajesh Sharma, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Yashpal Sharma, alongside Susmita Basumata from Kolkata, who plays Rimjhim’s elder sister, Runjhun.

The production is still in search of an established Bollywood actor to portray the pivotal role of Sawan.

Speaking about the project, Barsha Raut expressed her excitement, stating that the role aligns perfectly with her desire to challenge herself as an actor.

She acknowledged the difficulties of filming in extreme snowy conditions but emphasized that these challenges provide a platform to showcase her growth.

She also expressed pride in working alongside experienced Bollywood co-stars, viewing it as both a learning opportunity and a chance for her Nepali fans to see her in a completely new avatar.

Director Arnab Paul noted that Barsha was chosen for her distinct Nepali accent and immense talent, highlighting that she could be the first Nepali actress since Manisha Koirala to play a leading role in a Hindi film.

The film’s creative team is equally impressive. The script is penned by veteran writer and lyricist Rakesh Kumar Tripathi, who has contributed over 700 songs and 15 TV serials since 2002.

The technical crew features Indian National Award-winning professionals, including D.O.P. Asim Bose, Editor Arghya Kamal Mitra, and Art Director Atanu Saha.

Industry veteran Nang Anne Gogoi, with 12 years of experience across multiple film industries, serves as Line Producer and Costume Designer.

Additionally, Nepali production managers Ramgopal Timalsina and Nripesh Rupakhati ensure a strong collaborative effort between Nepal and India.
