Athletic Club created the first big chance early in the game when Álex Berenguer delivered a cross that led to a deflected attempt from João Cancelo, with the ball striking the crossbar.
Barcelona also threatened in the first half. Ferran Torres hit the post, while Marcus Rashford saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Unai Simón.
Yamal eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute to put Barcelona ahead.
Athletic Club pushed for an equalizer late in the match, but Oihan Sancet missed a good opportunity as Barcelona held on to secure all three points and extend their advantage at the top of the table.
