KATHMANDU: Police in Bara have taken a daughter-in-law into custody for questioning following the killing of a mother and her son in Parwanipur Rural Municipality–1, Rahariyadi, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The victims were identified as 52-year-old Sumitra Devi and her 32-year-old son Rameshwar Mandal, who were found dead after an attacker allegedly entered their home around 2:00 a.m. and assaulted family members with a sharp weapon.
District Police Office Bara chief SP Narendra Kunwar said Manita Devi, Rameshwar’s wife, has been detained for interrogation as part of the investigation. “She has been taken into custody for questioning,” he said, stressing that inquiries are ongoing to determine the sequence of events and identify the perpetrator.
Police said eight family members were present in the house at the time of the incident, including Sumitra’s husband Jagrook Mandal, their daughter Kiran Devi, daughter-in-law Manita Devi, and three children. Jagruk Mandal, Kiran Devi, and Manita Devi sustained injuries, with Jagrook reported to be in critical condition. All the injured are receiving treatment at LS Neuro Hospital in Parwanipur.
According to preliminary findings, Sumitra Devi was attacked outside the house, near the restroom, where her body was later discovered. Rameshwar Mandal’s body was found in the passage inside the house. Police said Manita Devi suffered minor injuries.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijayraj Pandit, the district police spokesperson, said investigators are interviewing family members and neighbors. “It is essential to speak with those present and nearby to establish who carried out the attack and how it unfolded,” he said.
The incident came to light after a child from the household alerted neighbors, prompting villagers to inform authorities. A relative, Sworup Mahato, said the family learned of the attack around 2:00 a.m. and rushed the injured to hospital.
SP Kunwar visited the crime scene shortly after receiving the report. “Initial evidence suggests a sharp weapon was used,” he said, adding that scene documentation has been completed. Police have also deployed a trained sniffer dog to assist in the search for the suspect, who remains at large.
Investigations are continuing.
