Presented by Mandala Theatre and produced by Buddhi Tamang, the play symbolically explores the muted suffering women endure after marriage, the invisible divisions within the household, and the growing ego that quietly erodes relationships.
Set against the language and social landscape of the Madhesh, Bahuriya focuses on a woman forced to hide her pain and a man who withholds his words—standing between them is an ego that steadily widens the emotional distance.
In the play, a woman enters her husband’s home as a daughter-in-law and is bound as a wife, yet belongs nowhere—neither fully to the household nor entirely within her marriage.
Her outward smile masks flowing tears and a lost laughter, scenes that leave a deep emotional impact on the audience.
Written and directed by Suraj Yadav, Bahuriya sharply portrays the psychological conflict of a woman trapped between two fears: speaking up and “breaking the home,” or remaining silent and breaking herself under social pressure.
This is neither a simple love story nor merely a family drama; it is an unsettling narrative of imbalance within relationships and the unseen colors they conceal.
Featuring compelling performances by Suraj Yadav and Prashansa Shivakoti, the play raises a profound question—why, even today, is a woman’s voice so often suppressed in society? Creatively directed by theatre artist Sarita Giri, Bahuriya will be staged at Mandala Theatre, Thapagaun, every evening at 5 pm from Magh 8 to 29, except Mondays. An additional show will be held on Saturdays at 1 pm.
