KATHMANDU: Argentina has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced on Tuesday via social media.

According to Quirno, the decision was communicated to the United Nations Secretary-General on March 17, 2025, and, under the Vienna Convention, the withdrawal took formal effect one year after notification.

Quirno emphasized that while Argentina will continue to pursue international health cooperation through bilateral agreements and regional forums, “our sovereign right and independence in determining national health policies will remain fully protected.”

The Argentine government first declared its intent to withdraw in March 2025. At the time, the presidential spokesperson noted that President Javier Milei had instructed the foreign minister to terminate the country’s participation in the international organization.

“The decision provides the country with greater flexibility to design policies according to national priorities, increases resource availability, and reinforces our commitment to sovereignty in health matters,” the government added.
