KATHMANDU: Sunsari’s Koshi Rural Municipality turned tense after a 45-year-old local, Vijay Sah of Puri Tole-1, was shot dead by Armed Police Force (APF) personnel during an anti-smuggling operation late Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. when Sah, allegedly carrying 8–10 sacks of sugar from India via City Safari, was shot by APF officers.

Following his death, angry locals staged protests at the scene, refusing to allow the authorities to remove the body, claiming the shooting was deliberate.

APF Koshi Province chief DIG Kumar Neupane said the personnel fired in self-defense after the group resisted the seizure. “The smugglers opened fire first, and our team responded,” he stated.

However, local residents rejected this claim, alleging that Sah was simply transporting sugar and that a dispute over a transaction led to the shooting.

They demand strict action against those responsible, insisting that a personal quarrel should not have ended in a fatality.
